Your precious waterbed has sprung a leak, and now you are faced with a big dilemma. Do you need to bite the bullet and invest in a new mattress, or is there a chance that you could repair this mattress and use it for a while longer? Waterbed mattress replacement is a decision that all owners of these glorious sleep solutions have to face at one time or another.
What can you lose by trying to patch a leak in your waterbed? Not a thing except a little time and the small cost of the supplies needed. If your efforts fail and you do have to replace your waterbed mattress, at least you'll know that you tried to avoid it.

First and foremost, locate the leak. Is it in the body of the waterbed, or in a seam? If the leak is coming from a seam, and your waterbed is still under warranty, get in touch with the dealer who sold you the bed and follow his instructions. You may end up with a waterbed mattress replacement in this instance, after all! If the leak is coming from the body of the bed, or your warranty has run out, then you have a little repair work to do.
Take a Sharpie marker, or any other type of waterproof marker, and circle the leak so you can quickly find it again. Then, gather your supplies. You will need a patch kit of the type sold for waterbeds or other inflatable items. These usually contain vinyl patches, and a superglue-like substance in a small tube. There is no need to drain the waterbed as long as it is leaking from a spot where you can maneuver the glue tube and patch around easily.
For Pinhole Leaks
If the leak is just a small pinhole, your repair should be easy. Make sure the area around the hole is very dry, then apply a drop of the glue directly to the hole. Let the glue dry for an hour or so, and then apply one more drop. This second drop should dry for several hours before any weight is put on the mattress, so if possible, do your repair work early in the day so you can sleep on your bed in the evening.
Larger Leaks
If the leak is larger, then you will have to make use of one of the vinyl patches. You'll need to cut and trim this patch until it is just slightly larger than the area you are going to patch. As before, dry the area around the leak well. Apply glue to the edges of the patch only, and be careful not to use too much! Otherwise, it will ooze out around the edges and be very messy. Place the patch over the leak, and smooth it out slightly. Allow it to dry for four to six hours before attempting to sleep on it.
If the above instructions for patching do not work, or the leak is in a spot where it is hard to patch, you may be out of luck. You may have no choice but to plan on buying a waterbed mattress replacement. If so, take advantage of all the advances in mattress technology that have taken place since you last bought a waterbed mattress, and choose a fine replacement that will serve you well for many years to come.
